Just wrote a cheesy poem to put in my Mother’s Day card this year

It’s Mother’s Day again, has it really been a year?

How times flies, so cavalier.

So I’m writing this poem to let you know

The calendar says that it’s time to show

You how much that I love you today,

To enter into this commercialised fray.

A contrived holiday to sell flowers and lollies,

And aprons and chocolates and mugs and dollies,

And photo frames and scarves and mountains of gold,

And anything pink – for mums young and old.

And to not conform would be rather dire,

For a lack of presents today is a misfire.

The companies tell you it means I don’t care,

That my love the other 364 days is hot air,

And if I truly respected you,

I would buy you a new hat or shoe.

So I’ve once again decided,

That to boycott this day would be misguided.

For even if the true meaning is manufactured,

Should I let it make my love fractured?

And ruin my year long appreciation,

Just to avoid some commercialisation?

I think in the end what I’m trying to say,

Is that I hope you have a nice day.

Not because corporations tell you so,

But because you’re a good mum and I think you should know.

So I hope my rhymes haven’t been too contrived,

And that to the end you have survived.

You’re hard to buy for – you know it’s true,

But I hope you enjoy what I got you.
